Animal Rights Without Liberation
Cochrane 提出一种基于利益的动物权利理论——动物拥有不被施加痛苦的权利,但不一定拥有自由的权利。并将理论应用于基因工程、宠物饲养、原住民狩猎和宗教屠宰等政策领域。 Cochrane develops an interest-based theory of animal rights — animals have rights not to suffer, but not necessarily rights to liberty. He then applies this theory to policy areas including genetic engineering, pet-keeping, indigenous hunting, and religious slaughter.
Animal Rights Without Liberation (Columbia UP, 2012) challenges the common assumption that animal rights necessarily entail animal liberation. Cochrane argues that while sentient animals have rights grounded in their interests (particularly the interest in not suffering), they do not necessarily have an interest in liberty. This provocative thesis has significant implications for debates about pet-keeping, zoos, and domestication.
